RSG and RCG — Responsible Gambling Training — simplified
Before you apply for bar or pub jobs in Australia (especially Queensland and New South Wales) or work in other gambling related establishments in other States in Australia, the Responsible Service of Gambling (RSG) certificate or the Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG) certificate may be something you need to get.
For working holiday makers moving around Australia, it's hard to know which course you need for which State, when you should do it and how to sign up. Unfortunately, current information available online can be confusing and there are many promoters online that just want your money regardless of whether you need to get your RSG or RCG certificate before you apply for jobs. That's why we've written this page for you - to consolidate and simplify all the information so you can make the right choices for your circumstances!
Important
- Some States allow you to complete the RSG course (or equivalent) online, while other States still require you to attend an approved class.
- Getting your RSG certificate (or equivalent) before you apply to jobs in certain States is important, while in other States the certificate is not required but may help your job search.
- You can save money by doing both your RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) and the RSG (or equivalent) training at the same time.
Why do I need to get an RSG certificate?
The State governments of Australia all have different regulations surrounding the responsible service of gambling. “Hang on, I am not going to work in a Casino or any other gambling establishment”, we hear you say. Well, due to the proliferation of poker machines (“the pokies”) in Australian hotels and pubs there is a very good chance you will be working around people who are “playing the pokies”. Basically, the RSG course (or RCG as it is called in a couple of States) helps you develop the skills and knowledge required to detect, and if necessary assist, a problem gambler. Therefore by law in many States you will need either RSG or RCG training to work in a pub or hotel, and in some States having this on your CV or resume before you apply to jobs may be the difference between getting an interview or not.
On the other hand if you are only interested in working in a resturant and RSA certificate may be all that you need.
We don't want you to waste your time or your money, so check out our quick guide to the RSG/RCG requirements by State so you can see if you need to get an RSG or RCG certificate before looking for work or the certificate is something you even need at all!
RSG Training Quick Guide
State | Should you complete RSG/RCG training? | Online/Classroom | How to get the training/certificate | Links to accredited organizations |
---|---|---|---|---|
QLD | Yes | Online | Many training organizations exist. Cost, support and user friendliness of the systems they use are the most important considerations. | See Below |
NSW | Yes | Class | The main differences between training organizations are their locations and the cost also varies. Expect to pay $10 more for a convenient downtown location. | See Below |
VIC | You have 6 months after starting employment | Class | The main differences between training companies are their location and the cost also varies a little. | Victorian Provider List |
TAS | Yes | Class | There are specific registered training organizations where you must attend in order to get an accredited course. | Tasmanian Provider List |
SA | You have 6 months after starting employment | Online | Many training organizations exist. Cost, support and user friendliness of the systems they use are the most important considerations. | South Australian RSG Provider List |
WA | No, it is not required | Online | Not applicable | Not applicable |
NT | You have 3 months after starting employment | Online | Many training organizations exist. Cost, support and user friendliness of the systems they use are the most important considerations. | Northern Territory Gaming |
From this chart you can see that Queensland and NSW are the only States where it would be a limiting factor in your job search not to have RSG/RCG training prior to applying to jobs. Therefore, for a bar, pub or hotel job in QLD or NSW we recommend completing a course - either online or in a classroom - as a first priority. For the other States, you can choose to do the training before applying to jobs if you wish, but not having the training is unlikely to be a hindrance in getting a job, either because there is time to do it after starting your new job or it is not required in the State where you want to work.

How do I complete the RSG course for QLD?
Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to get an RSG certificate and we recommend QHI (Quality Hospitality International) for an online RSG for Queensland. Before making this recommendation we actually toured their office and system. We feel confident that their system is first class and they will ensure you pass the course. Their online RSG course takes about 2-4 hours to complete and at the end of it you get a certificate which you can download. If you are comparing different RSG course providers, apart from being accredited with the OLGR (the Australian Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing) the main differences to consider are cost, the training systems they use and the support that they provide to you.
If you are interested in doing an RSA Course at the same time you can save money purchasing a combined RSA and RSG package.
How do I complete the RCG course for NSW?
Book your NSW RCG course ahead of time with TCP (Training Course Providers) who we have partnered with because they are specifically set up to help working travellers and have a very central location in Sydney. We have been to their offices many times and choose to recommend TCP because they are located in George St, the place is always full of backpackers and we’ve received positive feedback. If you plan to use a different RCG course provider in NSW, ensure that they are listed on the NSW OLGR website. If you are comparing different RCG course providers, apart from being properly accredited with the NSW OLGR (the NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing), the main difference to consider are cost and location (since the NSW RCG course is classroom-based).
What about Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Northern Territory and the ACT?
The RSG/RCG courses in other States are either not mandatory or you have 3 or 6 months to complete the course after you begin employment. However, having the course before you apply for jobs may look good on your CV or resume and show that you are serious about working in hotels, pubs or other establishments.
As a rule of thumb: if you have at least one year of relevant experience an employer will usually be more interested in hiring you, so in our opinion you should not worry about doing the course beforehand. However, if you do not have relevant experience and you really want to work in hotels or bars then it may be a good idea to do the relevant course (see our Quick Guide table for relevant course by State) before applying for jobs, although it is no guarantee of employment.
What benefit is there in completing an RSG/RCG course?
Having an RSG/RCG certificate will help you secure work faster in the hospitality industry in most States in Australia, especially ones where the gambling-related laws are very strict - like Queensland (Brisbane, Cairns, Townsville, Gold Coast) and NSW (Sydney). According to some online course providers’ websites, having the RSG/RCG certification will help you secure higher wages in jobs, but in reality you may not even get an interview without having the RSG/RCG training on your CV or resume in these States.
How do I choose a training organisation to do it?
This all depends on which state you wish to complete the course. i.e. if you are flying into NSW and planning to work for a bit then you won’t be able to do the course online but instead will have to book ahead with a training center. If you are planning on working in QLD then you can do the course online with a training company before you even arrive.

What happens after I’ve completed the relevant RSG/RCG course?
Online
Complete the course in your own time. Once it is completed you should indicate on your CV/resume that you have completed the course. Also include the unique registration number on the course certificate that you will receive upon completion of the course so that the employer can check you that you have actually taken the course. Take a copy of the certificate with you to interviews and your new employer will also want a copy of it to put in their file in case the auditors come knocking.

Is my RSG/RCG certificate transferable between States in Australia?
The RCG certificate, obtained from an accredited NSW course provider, is the only certificate valid in NSW. NSW does not accept certificates from other States’ training programs. An NSW RCG certificate is accepted in some other States, but not in QLD and Victoria. Similarly to NSW, QLD does not accept certificates from other States’ training programs.
How much does it cost? What else do I need to know?
Most accredited RSG/RCG certification courses cost around $60, so this is not a major expense. Don’t forget to claim this back on your tax the following year because it’s a work cost.
Always check before booking your course that it is applicable for the State that you need it for, the onus is on you to double check this because there are plenty of different online courses available.
Is there any reason why I shouldn't do an RSG/RCG course? Is it a waste of money?
Plain and simple - NO, it is not a waste of money. It is mandatory in many States in order to work in pubs or bars, does not cost much and you can claim it back as a work expense on your Australian tax the following year. So even if you complete the course and then end up spending the entire year of your working holiday in WA (where the course is not required), you can still get some of your course fee back (through claiming the fee as a work expense for Australian tax purposes).
