Simon Barnett has revealed he got the job of hosting Wheel of Fortune because former host Phillip Leishman was 'too old and too fat'.
On his Newstalk ZB radio show, Simon Barnett and Phil Gifford Afternoons on November 1, Barnett said he worked with the late Phillip Leishman at TVNZ at the time. Leishman hosted the game show in the early 1990s.
'Phillip Leishman told me this story with his own lips before he tragically passed away,' Barnett told listeners.
Leishman was sacked from the job, which Barnett said was awkward because he really liked him and he was a friend.

'Then he told me how it happened. There used to be a boss at TVNZ Mike Lattin [who] called Phillip Leishman into the office and said 'here's the deal Phil - you're too old, you're too fat, get Barnett on the line and tell him he's got the job.
